Competitive gaming: home network checklist

Use this checklist before you spend on new gear or a new ISP. Most competitive issues trace to Wi-Fi, local congestion, or routing rather than missing Mbps.

Who this page is for

Ranked players who want ordered steps rather than random tweaks.

Checklist

  1. Ethernet from PC or console to router.
  2. Close heavy downloads on all devices.
  3. Update router firmware responsibly.
  4. Pick correct in-game region.
  5. Run Pulse at problem times and save screenshots for support.

Run the Pulse UK speed test

Pulse measures download speed, latency, and jitter in your browser. It does not measure upload speed. For upload, use your provider’s tests or see our upload scope guide.

Compare broadband deals when your line is too small for what you do: BroadbandSwitch.uk, SearchSwitchSave.com, FibreSwitch.com.

UK rights and switching: start with Ofcom’s broadband guidance for personalised speed estimates, switching, and complaints.

Example scenario

You work through the list and find a bad cable. Replacing it fixes spikes that looked like ISP issues.

FAQ

Should I buy a “gaming router”?

Maybe after basics. Good placement and Ethernet beat many marketing features.

What is the single best upgrade for ranked play?

Ethernet to the gaming PC or console is usually the highest impact change before ISP upgrades.

Should I monitor temperatures on routers?

Hot equipment can throttle. Keep routers ventilated and dust-free.

Do I need to open ports for every game?

Only when the game or platform documentation says so. Avoid blanket port opening.

Can I test jitter without special tools?

Pulse gives jitter in the browser. Games may show their own telemetry; compare trends, not one tick.

When is it worth changing ISP for routing?

When you have long-term evidence on wired tests across several services and your ISP cannot improve routing.
