Why does my stream keep buffering?

Buffering means the player cannot download fast enough to keep its buffer full. The fix depends on whether the limit is your Wi-Fi, your broadband line at that moment, the service itself, or an underpowered device.

Who this page is for

Anyone who wants a calm order of checks instead of random reboots and guesswork.

Plain-English definitions

Buffer
A short queue of video already downloaded so playback can continue through small slowdowns.

Narrow the cause

  1. Try another app or another title to rule out a single service outage.
  2. Restart the device once, then retest.
  3. Compare Ethernet versus Wi-Fi for that device.
  4. Run Pulse when buffering happens versus when it does not.

If the line looks fine

Look at router placement, band selection, and interference. See the Wi-Fi guides linked below.

Run the Pulse UK speed test

Pulse measures download speed, latency, and jitter in your browser. It does not measure upload speed. For upload, use your provider’s tests or see our upload scope guide.

Compare broadband deals when your line is too small for what you do: BroadbandSwitch.uk, SearchSwitchSave.com, FibreSwitch.com.

UK rights and switching: start with Ofcom’s broadband guidance for personalised speed estimates, switching, and complaints.

Example scenario

Only one app buffers. Other apps work. You check the service status page and find an incident, so you wait rather than recontract.

FAQ

Is buffering always my ISP?

No. Wi-Fi, device performance, home congestion, and the streaming service can all cause it.

Does clearing cache stop buffering?

Sometimes it helps with app bugs, but sustained buffering usually points to throughput, Wi-Fi, or service issues.

Can a TV firmware update help?

Yes, occasionally. Combine updates with a wired test so you know if the device or network is the limit.

If every app buffers, what should I suspect first?

Shared home congestion or a weak Wi-Fi path to the device. Run Pulse on a cable and compare.

Is buffering always about Mbps?

No. High jitter or packet loss can disrupt streams even when average Mbps looks adequate.

When should I contact my ISP about streaming?

When fair, wired tests show a stable line but streaming still fails across apps and devices.
