About UKSpeedTest.co.uk and the person behind it
UKSpeedTest.co.uk is a free broadband speed test for UK homes and small businesses, built and run by Dr Alex J Martin-Smith as part of BroadbandSwitch.uk. There is no sign-up, no advertising and nothing to install. The test runs in your browser, your results stay on your device, and every figure on the site names the source it came from.
Who writes and builds this site
I am Alex Martin-Smith, a Chartered Manager with a doctorate in business administration, and the founder and director of Upleashed Limited, the Isle of Man company behind BroadbandSwitch.uk. I started BroadbandSwitch.uk in April 2026 to give people in the UK an honest way to compare broadband deals, and I build the free tools that sit around it: this speed test, RouterMap for router placement, RightSpeed for working out what speed a home needs, and ParentalControl.uk, which I fund as a public resource for families.
Every guide here goes out under my name: I check the numbers against Ofcom, the Advertising Standards Authority and the companies named, and I answer for what the pages say. You can find me on LinkedIn, and there is a longer profile on BroadbandSwitch.uk.
What Pulse measures and why we built it
Pulse measures download speed, upload speed, ping and jitter, and then checks how much your ping rises when the line is busy, which is the thing behind "the call froze when someone started a download". It runs against Cloudflare's public speed test edge from your own browser, so there is nothing to install and no account to make. The methodology page sets out every formula, every limit and every version change.
We built it because the number on a speed test only helps if you know what it means for your home. So the result tells you whether your line is comfortable for streaming, calls, gaming or working from home, how it compares with Ofcom's definitions, what your rights are if it falls short, and whether a better deal is waiting at your postcode.
How the site makes money, and how it does not
UKSpeedTest.co.uk carries no advertising and sells nothing. It is paid for by BroadbandSwitch.uk, which earns a commission from some providers when a visitor switches through the site. That does not change what you see here: the speed test treats every provider the same, the guides say what the evidence says, and deals on BroadbandSwitch.uk are listed lowest price first. No provider pays for a mention, a ranking or a kind word.
How we check facts and fix mistakes
- Sources. Figures come from Ofcom (Connected Nations, the broadband speeds code of practice, the universal service obligation), the Advertising Standards Authority, the named vendor's own published requirements, or our own measurements. Each guide lists its sources, and each infographic page carries an APA-style reference list.
- Dates. Pages show when they were last reviewed. Coverage and speed figures are re-based when Ofcom publishes new ones.
- Corrections. If something here is wrong, tell us through the contact page and we will check it and fix it. Material corrections are noted on the page concerned.
- Independence. Nobody outside BroadbandSwitch.uk edits or approves this site, and we do not link to comparison sites that compete with it.
Privacy and accessibility
Your results stay in your browser; we keep no personal data and no test results on our servers. The privacy policy and cookies page explain the detail. Every page carries the accessibility tools panel (text size, colour themes, a dyslexia friendly typeface, read aloud and more), and the accessibility statement says what is built in and how to report a problem.
