What broadband speed do you need? The UK speed ladder
Most UK homes need less than the adverts suggest, and busy families need more than they would guess. Ofcom treats 10 Mbps as the floor for a decent service, 30 Mbps as superfast and 300 Mbps as ultrafast. Between those lines, what matters is how many screens and calls are running at 8pm. This ladder puts a number on each step.
What it means for you
- Run the speed test, find your number on the ladder, and check whether the row below describes your evenings. If it does not, something between the router and the sofa is losing speed.
- A family of four with video calls and three HD screens is comfortable from about 70 Mbps. Under 30 Mbps the evenings will show.
- Above 300 Mbps the line is rarely the bottleneck; Wi-Fi and older devices are. Pay for it if you upload a lot or have a houseful, not for the number.

Compare deals at my postcodeThe numbers behind the chart
| Download speed (Mbps) | Band | Comfortable for |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Decent broadband minimum (USO) | One person browsing, email and one HD stream. Below this you can demand an upgrade. |
| 30 | Superfast (Ofcom: 30 Mbps and above) | A couple streaming in HD, light working from home, one person gaming. |
| 70 | Family | Family of four: video calls, HD on three screens, homework and a games console. |
| 150 | Fast | 4K on several screens at once, online gaming, a houseful of phones and smart devices. |
| 300 | Ultrafast (Ofcom: 300 Mbps and above) | Busy household, two people working from home, big uploads, 8K and VR. |
| 900 | Gigabit | Everything at once. Future-proof. Your Wi-Fi becomes the limit, not the line. |
Questions people ask
Is 30 Mbps enough for a family?
For a couple, yes. For a family with video calls and several screens going at once, 30 Mbps is tight and 70 Mbps or more is comfortable.
Do I need gigabit broadband?
Almost no home needs it today. It is worth having when the price is close to a 300 Mbps package, because you will not have to think about speed again, and upload is usually far higher too.
What is the legal minimum broadband speed in the UK?
Under the broadband universal service obligation you can request a connection of at least 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload if nothing affordable is available at your address.
