What a speed test measures: download, upload, ping and the busy-line grade

A speed test is four quick questions about your connection. Download is how much arrives each second. Upload is how much leaves. Ping is how long a round trip to a server takes. The busy-line grade is how much that ping rises when the line is full, which is what makes a call freeze when someone starts a download.

Diagram of the four speed test numbers: download arrives at the home, upload leaves it, ping is the round trip time, and the busy-line grade is how much ping rises when the line is full
Download fills the house, upload leaves it, ping is the round trip, and the busy-line grade shows what happens when everyone is online at once.
