What ping feels like: latency bands for UK broadband
Ping is how long a round trip to a server takes, in milliseconds. It is the number behind how instant the internet feels, and it matters more than download speed for gaming and video calls. Under 20 ms feels immediate. 20 to 50 ms is good. 50 to 100 ms is fair, and fast-paced games start to feel a touch late. Over 100 ms is laggy, and people on a call start talking over each other.
What it means for you
- A full fibre line to a nearby server typically sits under 20 ms. Cable and part-fibre lines usually land between 20 and 50 ms.
- Wi-Fi adds ping. If your wired test is in the good band and your Wi-Fi test is not, the router and its position are the problem, not the line.
- Jitter, how much ping wobbles between samples, matters as much as the average. Over 30 ms of jitter makes calls stutter even when the average ping looks fine.
Full fibre typically halves it. Compare deals at your postcode on BroadbandSwitch.uk.

| Ping (ms) | Feels like | Typical of |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 20 | Instant | Full fibre to a nearby server. Competitive gaming feels immediate. |
| 20 to 50 | Good | Most full fibre, cable and part-fibre lines. Fine for gaming and calls. |
| 50 to 100 | Fair | Busy Wi-Fi, older copper lines, some 4G and 5G. Fast games feel a touch late. |
| Over 100 | Laggy | Satellite, congested lines, far-away Wi-Fi. Calls talk over each other. |
Questions people ask
What is a good ping for gaming?
Under 50 ms is good and under 20 ms is excellent. Above 100 ms you will notice the delay in fast-paced games. Use an Ethernet cable; it beats Wi-Fi for ping every time.
What ping do video calls need?
Under 100 ms with low jitter. Zoom, Teams and FaceTime all cope with a steady 50 ms far better than a wobbly 30 ms.
Can I lower my ping?
Use a cable instead of Wi-Fi, move the router away from walls and metal, close background downloads, and if the line itself is slow, full fibre typically cuts ping by half or more compared with copper.
